Teams vs individual play

Set up 2 to 5 teams, choose who submits answers, understand team scoring and switch formats between games.

3 min readUpdated Sep 2, 2026

Choose individual play when everyone should compete under their own name. Choose teams when you want people to discuss answers or take turns contributing to a shared score.

Both formats use the same session link. Players join on their own devices, even when they are on a team.

Set up teams

  1. In the lobby, use the player and team controls to select Teams.
  2. Choose 2 to 5 teams and give them recognisable names.
  3. Let players select a team when they join, or use the host's team controls to organise the group.
  4. Check the teams before starting. Randomising redistributes players, so do it before people settle into their groups.

Players can choose Be the team lead before a game. The team lead can rename the team before play; team names must be unique and no longer than 20 characters. Players can also switch teams before play when that option is available.

For a classroom, you could put learners into mixed groups to discuss an answer. At an offsite, you might mix departments rather than copying the office seating plan. See facilitator ideas and team-building games.

How team answers and scores work

The answer method depends on the game:

Game formatWho answers? How the team scores
Unscramble, Missing Letter, Odd One Out, Trivia, and Sub-WordsThe team lead submits by default. The host can enable submissions from all team members in game settings. One qualifying submission determines the team's round score. Individual submissions are not added together.
Charades, Taboo, Song Association, and Word ArtOne teammate takes the turn, with roles rotating between rounds. The result of that turn contributes to the team score.
Who Said ItEach team contributes one answer and guesses which teams wrote the other answers. The team earns points for correctly identifying authors.

When everyone can submit in a quiz game, a correct answer is preferred to a wrong one; speed breaks ties between correct answers. In Sub-Words, the stronger valid submission counts. Allowing everyone to answer does not multiply the team's score by its size.

For supported turn-based games, a member of the active team can choose Play this round to take over the turn.

Games that use individual mode

Find the Mole, Villagers & Wolves, Two Truths and a Lie, Bingo, and Crack the Code use individual mode. Their roles, votes, cards, or guesses belong to each player, even when the story divides the group into sides.

If a game is unavailable in team mode, return to the lobby or team controls between games and switch to individuals.

Can I change the format during a session?

Yes. You can change the session's mode and team setup in the lobby or between games. Finish the current game before reorganising the group, then check the roster and any settings for the next game.

You do not need to create a new session just to switch formats. Existing results belong to the completed game; changing teams is preparation for the next one.
